Structured Cabling
Structured cabling in essence allows the majority of today's Data and Voice networks to be distributed over a single infrastructure. With the arrival of IP Communications it has never been more critical to have a platform upon which all applications can be built with confidence.
At the centre of every IT system is the data cabling infrastructure, the nuts and bolts that hold the whole system together. Without a good quality infrastructure, data will be transmitted slower, information can be corrupted or lost and in the very worst case applications will simply fail.
Switching
Traditional LANs were designed for file and printer sharing within a limited geographic area, such as a single building, with the evolution of technologies including the requirement to transfer High-Definition Imaging, Full-Motion Video, Audio and IP Telephony the use of legacy concentrators such as hubs is no longer viable.
The use of switching technology allows for the micro segmentation of networks providing the ability for multiple contiguous conversations in addition to Full Duplex operation, greatly improving bandwidth and performance.
Routing
Routing is the process of sending data from a host on one network or VLAN to a remote host on another network or VLAN through a router or routers. Routed networks range from simple site to site fixed or dial up links to the Internet. Based at Layer 3, routers base decisions on logical addresses rather than the Layer 2 physical addresses used by switches.
Using the available Layer 3 information, routers can choose the best path based on cost, bandwidth, delay along with many other variables. Access control lists can be applied to limit access between separate networks. Routers can use three options for route selection;
